Cohesive & SaaS

The operating model becomes the product.

A SaaS product organizes work through its records, available actions, business rules, processes, and responsibilities. People and agents need clear ways to participate in that work.

From Records To Delegation

Companies still need durable records for customers, orders, contracts, inventory, financial state, identity, and audit. As agents take on more work, those records need a clearer account of what may happen next.

Record

What is true?

Canonical entities, state, history, identity, and permissions make the product a trustworthy source of operational facts.

Action

What may change?

Transitions state the available actions, their inputs, constraints, authority, effects, and possible outcomes.

Workflow

What is already in motion?

Processes carry waits, handoffs, retries, approvals, and compensation across people, systems, and time.

Delegation

What may an agent do?

Agent roles receive selected observations and actions inside explicit policies, authority boundaries, and escalation paths.

As agents take on work across applications and interfaces become easier to tailor, a fixed set of screens carries less of the product's meaning. A refund may begin in a support screen, an API request, or a conversation with an agent. Each entry point needs the same account of refundable amounts, approval rules, payment obligations, and progress.

Human interfaces remain valuable for understanding and controlling work. Their relationship to the operating model becomes more explicit: each presents selected observations, actions, and process state for a particular task.

Why Automation Breaks

Most SaaS systems express the same domain several times. Database schemas, services, API handlers, frontend models, background jobs, search indexes, analytics, and integrations each preserve a different part of the meaning.

The drift is manageable while a person can fill the gaps. An agent has to infer which action is legal, which state is authoritative, which side effect marks a commitment, and which process is still running. Missing context turns ordinary automation into risky delegation.

Safe automation needs more than API access. A callable endpoint describes a technical surface. Safe participation also requires semantics, policy, authority, failure meaning, and evidence about the resulting state change.

One Source For The Operating Model

Cohesive artifacts describe entities and transitions, relations and projections, durable processes, identity, policies, and realization requirements. Compilers resolve those definitions into one semantic system graph.

Supported projections carry that meaning into database representations, APIs, generated clients, materialized views, workflows, and agent context. Bindings connect the graph to the databases, services, and engines that already run the product.

This keeps implementation choices flexible. A local update can remain a direct transaction. Work that crosses time can use a durable workflow. Reliable publication can use an outbox or stream. The graph records the requirement and the chosen realization while each part of the product remains free to use the pattern that fits.

The process definition states the required behavior, including waits, decisions, and recovery obligations. Its execution strategy depends on the workload and the guarantees a target can provide. Moving to another engine requires checking those guarantees and planning state migration; preserving the definition alone does not make hosts interchangeable.

A Surface For Bounded Agency

A mature product exposes more than data. Its surfaces state what the system provides, what it requires, which effects it may produce, which guarantees it claims, and which assumptions support those claims.

That structure gives an operational agent grounded product context. The agent sees available actions, relevant state, active processes, and policy. The authority to accept a change remains with the declared person, policy, protocol, or entity transition.

Authority is specific to a fact or decision. The order system may own refund eligibility while the payment provider owns evidence of settlement. A process crossing those systems needs to distinguish an accepted request, a local commitment, and a confirmed outcome. One application's record cannot establish every fact about the work.

Measure The Result

Cohesive's value can be evaluated across successive product changes: how long contributors take to understand behavior, which defects are caught before release, how much projections drift, and how often automated work needs manual repair. The language and its supported bindings have to improve those outcomes enough to justify maintaining the model.
